Scale of Rotherham abuse shocked man who exposed it
The journalist who uncovered the Rotherham grooming gangs scandal has said that even he massively underestimated the scale of the abuse.
Andrew Norfolk told the BBC on the 10th anniversary of the Jay Report that he had "absolutely no idea" it would name 1,400 girls as victims before the figure was announced at a bombshell press conference.
Mr Norfolk had been putting pressure on Rotherham Council and South Yorkshire Police to answer questions about child sexual exploitation by predominantly Asian men since he started receiving tip-offs in 2011.
His subsequent investigation for The Times had "seismic" ramifications and led to a major inquiry.

Rotherham abuse trial: Six guilty of sex offences
Arshid Hussain, 40, High Street, East Cowick, Goole, was convicted of 23 of the 28 charges he faced, including indecent assault and rape.
Basharat Hussain, 39, of no fixed abode, was convicted of all 15 charges he faced, including two counts of rape.
Bannaras Hussain, 36, of Bridge Close, Goole, pleaded guilty before the trial to 10 charges including rape, indecent assault and assault occasioning actual bodily harm.
Qurban Ali, 53, Clough Road, Rotherham, was convicted of conspiracy to rape, but cleared of three other charges including rape.
Karen MacGregor, 58, Barnsley Road, Wath, South Yorkshire, was convicted of of conspiracy to procure prostitutes and false imprisonment.
Shelley Davies, 40, Wainwright Road, Kimberworth Park, Rotherham, was found guilty of conspiracy to procure prostitutes and false imprisonment.
Majid Bostan, 37, Ledsham Road, Rotherham, was acquitted of one charge of indecent assault.

A report that warned authorities in Rotherham about child sexual exploitation in the town 12 years ago has been made public for the first time.
Dr Angie Heal, a former South Yorkshire Police drugs analyst, says she wrote one report in 2003 and another in 2006 warning about gangs grooming and abusing girls in the town – and even named suspected offenders – but no action was taken.
Last year, it was estimated that at least 1,400 children had been sexually abused in Rotherham between 1997 and 2013, predominantly by gangs of British-Pakistani men.
